The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) successfully held its delegate election to the 8th General Assembly. From 27 – 30th of July, 2024, the Uyghur diaspora community gathered in their local communities in over 20 countries to elect delegates to participate in the WUC’s 8th General Assembly.

From June 10 to June 30, 2024, all Uyghurs aged 18 and above had the opportunity to submit their candidacy as a delegate for the 8th General Assembly.

More than 300 individuals put their candidacy forward for the elections. Amongst the elected delegates, there are 71% graduates, 11% academics, 37% youth, 33% women, and 39% are first time applicants.

The elections took place across the world, including in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Canada, USA, Australia, Japan, Türkiye, Central Asia and other countries.

176 delegates were elected democratically, in accordance with the quota of each country. The countries with the highest quota are in Central Asia, Türkiye, Germany, Canada, USA and Australia.

The elected 176 delegates will be invited to participate in the upcoming General Assembly as well as use their right to vote to choose the next WUC presidency and Executive Committee. The delegates will also have the opportunity to nominate themselves for a presidency position or Executive Committee, by mid-September.

The General Assembly at the end of October will also be attended by international observers, including politicians, government officials, NGO representatives, scholars and press.

The location of the General Assembly will be announced at a later date.
